Hi there! My name is Harold Buckner and I live in Roanoke VA. I’m a proud owner of a rare 1968 Firebird 400 H.O. 4 speed convertible.
I had been looking for a Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible for some time and ran across this rare Firebird one day on craigs list. When I went to inspect the car the owner did not know much about the history or what he exactly had other then it being a 68 Firebird. Upon Inspecting the Firebird, I knew some things were missing but all the key items making it a 400 were there. I decided to grab the vin and contact Pontiac Historic Services the following day.
Upon receiving the PHS documents, I found out that this was truly a 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 H.O. 4 Speed Convertible. A very rare car with less then 150 built. 1968 400 Convertibles are getting hard to find especially a documented 400 H.O.
I purchased my Firebird Feb 24, 2013 and I started a full restoration on it the following month. My restoration consists of restoring the Firebird back to it’s original state and with the correct dated parts. My biggest hurdle will be finding a correct WQ code block which at this point seems impossible. With only 1498 1968 WQ coded blocks casted, that may never happen.
My 400 H.O. 4 speed Convertible was born the 4th week Sept 1967. It had Aegena Blue paint and parchment pearl custom interior. It had power brakes, power steering and power top.
It was sold to Raleigh Motor Sales Inc. in Beckley, WV on Oct, 3 1967. Which was 30 min from were I grew up in Princeton WV. I tried to trace back the roots of the car but because of privacy laws, DMV could not help and I did not gain much ground.
I estimate about 20 years ago someone had attempted some level of restoration on the car. The car had new quarter metal installed, floor pans, and inside door panels.
Someone had swapped out the motor with a later 400 along with most of the accessories. I was sort of lucky to have at least the original transmission and rear axle.
Below is the documentation of my car. The car billing history and decode sheet along with the window sticker.
